Safer streets Lyneham

A project of Walk Cycle Lyneham & Beyond, Living Streets, and Canberra by Bike

The current speed is too high, resulting in hostile public space for everyone outside cars. Many children don’t feel safe enough to ride to school alone or with friends, while it makes walking or wheeling to the shops unattractive, be it on the road, or our broken, narrow footpaths.

Why 30km/h?

They make our streets safer, quieter, and more liveable.

If you’re hit by a person driving at 30km/h, your chance of surviving is 90%. The higher the speed, the greater the risk you’ll die or be seriously injured.

30 means fewer crashes, so your car insurance costs and hospital emergency costs fall. 30 means less infrastructure is required, because conflicts are reduced. People driving have more time to react. 30 means short trips such as to the shops or social visits become more attractive, meaning some people opt for walking or wheeling rather than driving.

Canberra would join a long list of cities and countries that have enacted a default 30km/h/20mph. Cities like Yarra in Melbourne, Wellington New Zealand, Wales, the Netherlands, Ghent in Belgium, Mongkok in Hong Kong.

Our petition to pilot 30 in Lyneham

We’ve partnered with our friends at Walk Cycle Lyneham & Beyond and Living Streets for this petition urging the ACT Government to pilot a lower speed in Lyneham. It’s for residential streets, not arterial roads like Mouat. For example, Brigalow St, in front of the primary school and Brindabella Christian College.
Thank you Thomas Emerson MLA for sponsoring our petition. It’s open until 8 Aug 2025.
